Think about it: we all have the same number of hours in the day. So it must be what you do with those hours that determines how much success you achieve. I’m personal trainer Chase Weber, though some people call me C-Web or Biz, most call me by my Instagram name, Chasenfitness. I don’t like to say I’m an expert at what I do, and I’m not going to gas myself up as someone with all the answers. But I will let you know that what I have learned in going from a young trainer in Los Angeles to now running two successful businesses is how to separate what you want from what you need.
People always look for some complex formula that explains why some people are successful and others are not. But it really just comes down to giving your best effort in the allotted time you have. In other words, productivity.
All successful people understand that time is the most precious commodity out there.
It’s the one thing you can’t buy or buy back. The most successful people know they have to give their all to any task at hand. For those of you who struggle with productivity or just need a little extra help to get over the hump, I’m going to share the four steps I have tried to follow to improve in all facets of life.
1. Give it your all
A goal without a passion is not sustainable.
Telling yourself I am going to give every ounce of my time to see the results is the only way it will happen.
You can try to convince yourself that you’ve done what you needed to do today and you got through. But what did you really do that made you better than those around you? You can say I went to the gym, but how much effort did you really put in? You could complain that you can’t add muscle or you can’t lose weight, but when you go to the gym it just boils down to if you really want to gain the mass or you really want to lose the weight.
2. Find your focus
One thing that helped me so much was deciding to focus on just being a trainer and not some agent or “cool person” that knows or hangs around other cool people. Living in LA can be hard like that, especially if you are not really organized and clear in what you are trying to achieve. In our society, we do things that we think are beneficial and then get frustrated when we don’t see the results. I would often look at people driving fancy cars and think “wow, how did they get that” or “I need to do what they do.” But at the end of the day, when you let the outside views become a distraction, you start to lose focus on the one thing you are good at. If you can just dial in on the one job or goal you want to be great at, it won’t matter what others are doing. I managed to do that and find some value in it, and that is when things took off for me.
3. Prepare for you what you want yourself to be
When you do something, try your best to do it right the first time. That’s what separates people who are successful from those who are not: attention to detail. You can look at Tiger Woods, Michael Jordan, Simone Biles, Serena Williams, Arnold Schwarzenegger—the list goes on. They are the best at their sport because they gave their heart and their soul throughout every rep, every set and every gym session for days, weeks, months, years and decades to break through all the barriers. Like most athletes, I struggled with this myself early on in my career. I didn’t dedicate myself to my craft because it was not a priority, so I cut corners and skipped steps.
But I quickly learned you cannot build a foundation on sand,
and I started to plan out what I wanted my professional and personal lives to look like. That’s when things started looking up for me. There were many pivots that I had to deal with, but having the direction in place made it possible. It’s in you, I promise… you just have to believe that its really there.
4. Put it all together
Each of the things we just discussed above really trickle down to all facets of your life. It’s about doing every single task right and not having to go back and do them again. Practice makes perfect, right? Dedication and effort in all things you do and doing your homework are essential. Maybe it’s that business proposal you’ve been working on, or even just the small things like doing the dishes or cleaning the house. How do you expect to run a Fortune 500 company when you can’t even do the dishes? You don’t have to be perfect every time, but you should be as close as you can get. Time is precious, and having time for what matters is what’s going to get you where you want to be.
I hope this helps you understand productivity a little better. Going through the motions is the worst thing you can do when it comes to getting what you want in life. If you know you aren’t meeting certain criteria or you can’t figure out how and why you aren’t getting the results, just know it starts and ends with you.
